Publisher sought for the EFSA Journal

(30.04.2015) The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has launched a procurement procedure to identify a publishing partner for its main scientific publication, the EFSA Journal. The services required include editorial and production, hosting and marketing and the contract is valued at EUR 3 million for a period of up to six years.

The EFSA Journal provides open access to the Authority’s scientific advice and presents an exciting opportunity for a publisher to work with a European Agency in developing its publishing programme.

EFSA Lead Editor, Arthur Healy, commented:  “EFSA wants to move the Journal forward to deliver the publishing service required by the organisation and its networks of experts. We are looking for a publisher with the know-how and infrastructure to deliver a high-quality product using the latest technology and with the expertise to drive the impact of EFSA’s science.”

“Because of our close ties to the scientific community and our diverse stakeholder needs, the selected publisher must have a clear and demonstrable commitment to open science and the flexibility to work with the sometimes complex workflows and time pressures we face.”

Established in 2002, EFSA is an EU Agency that provides the evidence base to underpin European food and feed safety policy. Based in Parma, Italy, EFSA is tasked by the European Commission, Member States and European Parliament to address risks across the food chain and to communicate on those risks to a wide audience.

EFSA also has a central coordinating role in collecting and analysing data relating to foodborne diseases, diet and other key public health issues such as antimicrobial resistance, as well as the development of new methodologies to address emerging risks.

The tender documentation for the open call (which closes on May 29) is available at: www.efsa.europa.eu/en/tenders/tender/ocefsacomms201501.htm

Publishers intending to submit an offer should also read carefully the EFSA Guidance for Tenderers which is available at: www.efsa.europa.eu/en/procurement/docs/EFSAguidancefortenderers.pdf
